Meraki: Preschool Infrastructure Dashboard

Meraki is an nonprofit based in Northern India that partner with state government to provide stable learning environments and improve school conditions. I collaborated on a team of developers and a product manager to build a dashboard for policymakers to see preschool data in a digestible and impactful way. Our goal was to design a dashboard for users who may not be as technically skilled, but still gain the needed information to provide impactful support.

The Problem

Policymakers Struggle Providing Aid

Without records and management of school conditions, budgeting and proper school aid is ineffective, inaccurate, and harmful to children developmental success.

Current data collection relies on Google Form inputs and is managed in a Excel table prone to input errors and requires frequent data cleaning.

With a dated system, we found our target users my lack the familiarity with traditional dashboard visualizations and navigation.

This results in a lack of expenditure planning, making it harder for them to effectively manage AWCs, Anganwadis–or preschools, in their region.

A large challenge was making the preschool data simple and easy to take action on for government officials.

We Found That…

Our original data visuals were traditional donut/pie charts, but we found these designs confusing for users to understand the representative parts. Instead we opted to a more bar format which helped 90% of users understand the distribution and comparison of usable facilities.

The Facility Status Cards had poor hierarchy emphasizing the wrong information. The icon was used as an visual anchor , but this took away from the most important information being the percentile. Thus, we shifted the icon up to the title and increased the percentile with both size and the supporting status color.

Sub-Category Navigation

Sub-categories originally were tabs reminiscent of excel/sheets, but users found it too small and preferred seeing the percentile as a preview into subcategory information. We shifted the tabs to the side and brought more emphasis to the percentile in both the card and subcategory heading.

The facilities page gives a deeper view of the facilities tracked within preschools and their conditions/usability. Officials can also export these insights in the form of a CSV to view in a spreadsheet platform.

Data Collection & Authentication

For security, data collection requires the assigned AWC number to schools to be able to validate. It also redirects to the standardized Google Form for data collection which is quicker and faster for on sight reporting.

Designing For Social Good

☝️My First Dashboard

This was one of my first live dashboard projects I had the opportunity to design. I had some in-class projects, but the real world application and impact of this project was a huge learning moment and challenge.

💥 Breaking Tradition

This was a challenging design space for me because a large part of my process is referencing current patterns and live product, but we found that our users were not always familiar with these new UI and platforms. I needed to design with a new perspective and rely heavily on our users feedback.

🏃‍♀️Fast Development

We had a very fast timeline being just a semester project. Thus the development team needed us to create a foundation design for them to work on before moving to a higher fidelity as we continued to design. It required fast sprints of iteration and close communication with our devs.
